HISTORY OF MATER CHRISTI ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SACRED MUSIC The Mater Christi Academy of Arts and Sacred Music, Amawbia, Anambra State, Nigeria, was founded with a deep awareness of the powerful role music plays in the spiritual and human formation of the person. Music, as a divine gift, has the unique ability to connect the human soul with God, foster inner transformation, and communicate the truths of faith in a profound and lasting way. As expressed in Sacred Scripture, “Sing joyfully to God our strength” (Psalm 81:2), music remains an essential part of worship and spiritual life. In response to the growing need for proper formation in sacred and liturgical music within the Church, the academy was established to train musicians, choristers, and music directors who would serve both the Church and society with excellence, competence, and spiritual depth. The academy officially began on January 4, 2016, with the registration of its first three students. Shortly after, academic activities commenced on January 15, 2016, with weekend lectures and practical training sessions. These humble beginnings marked the foundation of what has grown into a center for structured musical and spiritual formation. Later in August 2016, the academy introduced its Two-Week Summer Holiday Music Programme, designed to provide intensive training for both boarders and day students. This programme has since become an annual event, offering opportunities for children, youth, and adults to develop their musical skills in a focused environment. Over the years, the academy has continued to expand its programmes to meet the holistic needs of individuals. In January 2025, a Weekly Therapeutic Music Programme was introduced for clients undergoing psychotherapy. This initiative integrates music therapy with spiritual and liturgical participation, reflecting the academy’s commitment to addressing not only artistic development but also psychological and spiritual well-being. From its inception, the academy has offered structured academic programmes, including Diploma and Certificate courses in Music, alongside weekend and short-term training programmes. These programmes combine both theoretical and practical instruction in areas such as music theory, voice training, Gregorian chant, instrumental performance, choir direction, and music composition. Through the years, the academy has recorded steady growth in student enrollment and graduation, contributing to the formation of trained musicians who serve in churches, schools, and communities. Today, the Mater Christi Academy of Arts and Sacred Music continues to pursue its mission of forming individuals who will use music as a means of worship, evangelization, cultural enrichment, and service to humanity. Rooted in faith and committed to excellence, the academy remains dedicated to nurturing talents and raising a new generation of musicians grounded in both artistic skill and spiritual values.
